Lake Belton’s hopes for their first-ever playoff victory were dashed Friday night as they faced a formidable Denton Ryan team eager to make up for last year’s early postseason exit. The Raiders dominated in all phases of the game, earning a decisive 38-13 win in the Class 5A Division I bi-district playoff at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.
Ryan quarterback Braeden Mussett led the charge with two electrifying first-half touchdown runs of 53 and 26 yards, helping the Raiders build a 17-0 lead. Mussett racked up 158 rushing yards, supported by standout performances from junior Nemo Warmate (117 yards, one touchdown) and sophomore Tre’Vaughn Reynolds (84 yards, one touchdown). The Raiders’ ground attack amassed an impressive 356 yards and five touchdowns.
Lake Belton’s offense struggled against Ryan’s swarming defense, managing only 157 total yards. Senior receiver Micah Hudson provided a rare bright spot with two second-quarter touchdown receptions, finishing with eight catches for 88 yards and 31 rushing yards. However, the Broncos’ ground game outside of Hudson was non-existent, gaining zero yards on 16 attempts. Turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble, further hindered Lake Belton’s efforts.
Ryan set the tone early, scoring on the game’s first play when Mussett sprinted 53 yards untouched for a touchdown. The Raiders’ defense then forced a three-and-out, and Ryan extended their lead with a Daniel Rodriguez field goal and Mussett’s second touchdown run.
Although Hudson’s dazzling plays brought the Broncos within striking distance by halftime, trailing 24-13, Ryan shut them out in the second half. Short touchdown runs by Nemo Warmate and Uzziah Warmate sealed the victory.
The win marked a satisfying return to form for a Ryan team that claimed the 5A Division I state championship in 2020 but suffered a narrow first-round loss in overtime last year. The Raiders (8-2) will face Abilene (9-2) in the area round next week, while Lake Belton (8-3) ends its season with another early playoff exit.
