The Albany Lions showcased their defensive prowess once again, stifling the high-powered Mart Panthers in a decisive 28-10 victory to claim the Class 2A Division II state championship at AT&T Stadium. This marks Albany’s second consecutive title and fourth in program history, cementing their dominance in Texas high school football.
Defensive Dominance Sets the Tone
From the outset, Albany’s defense dictated the game, holding Mart to a mere field goal in the first half. The Lions forced an early turnover when Cason Fairchild intercepted a pass on the first play from scrimmage. Later, a critical sack by Adam Hill derailed a promising Mart drive, forcing the Panthers to punt.
Mart managed a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter but struggled to sustain offensive momentum against Albany’s relentless defense.
Hill Shines on Offense
Adam Hill, a senior standout, broke the defensive deadlock in the second quarter with a 52-yard touchdown run. A Mart fumble on the next possession set up another Albany score, with quarterback Chip Chambers connecting with Branson Beal for a 37-yard touchdown pass.
Chambers continued to deliver, throwing a 2-yard touchdown pass to Hill just before halftime. The Lions entered the break with a commanding 21-3 lead, aided by a controversial no-call on a potential fumble that went in Albany’s favor.
Mart’s Late Push Falls Short
Mart’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when JD Bell capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive with a 7-yard run. However, Albany’s defense held firm, thwarting a critical fourth-down attempt late in the game.
With under a minute remaining, Hill sealed the victory with a 5-yard touchdown run, punctuating a stellar performance on both sides of the ball.
A Legacy of Excellence
The win not only completes Albany’s perfect 16-0 season but also marks the second consecutive year they have handed Mart its only loss in the state championship. Under the leadership of coach Denney Faith, the Lions continue to build on their storied legacy, now boasting four state titles in eight appearances.
