The Gunter Tigers capped off an undefeated 16-0 season with a commanding 30-14 victory over the Tidehaven Tigers to claim their second consecutive 3A Division II state championship. Gunter’s relentless defense and timely offensive plays proved too much for Tidehaven in a game that swung decisively in Gunter’s favor by halftime.
Early Back-and-Forth
Tidehaven struck first in the opening quarter when Joseph Dodds, their standout running back, broke free for a 43-yard run, setting up a touchdown reception that gave Tidehaven a 7-0 lead. Gunter answered quickly with a field goal to close the quarter at 7-3.
Momentum shifted in the second quarter as Gunter quarterback Walker Overman’s 12-yard scramble set up a touchdown run by Brock Boddie. The score gave Gunter a 10-7 advantage, and they never trailed again.
Gunter Pulls Ahead
A crucial punt return by Parker Harris set Gunter up for another score as Boddie dove into the end zone for his second touchdown, extending the lead to 17-7. Tidehaven stayed within striking distance with another electrifying 61-yard touchdown run by Dodds, narrowing the margin to 17-14 at halftime.
Second-Half Defense and Big Plays
The third quarter turned into a defensive stalemate until Overman connected with wide receiver Cannon Lemberg on a short pass that turned into a spectacular 68-yard touchdown. The play widened Gunter’s lead to 24-14.
Gunter’s defense held strong in the fourth quarter, forcing Tidehaven to turn the ball over on downs. Overman sealed the victory with a 1-yard quarterback sneak, solidifying Gunter’s dominance with just over five minutes remaining.
