The Aledo Bearcats showcased their dominance in a commanding 51-8 victory over the Smithson Valley Rangers to secure the 2023 5A Division I State Championship. Despite an early challenge from the Rangers, Aledo’s relentless offense and smothering defense carried them to their second consecutive state title.
Early Challenges, Swift Turnaround
Smithson Valley opened the scoring with a safety and a 49-yard field goal, taking an early 5-0 lead. The Rangers’ defense capitalized on an interception to extend their advantage to 8-0. However, Aledo quickly found their rhythm, marching 75 yards on an 11-play drive capped by Hawk Patrick-Daniels’ first of three touchdowns, narrowing the gap to 8-7 by the end of the first quarter.
Aledo Takes Control
In the second quarter, Patrick-Daniels broke loose for a 43-yard gain, setting up another touchdown run to give Aledo their first lead at 14-8. The Bearcats’ momentum continued as quarterback Hauss Hejny connected with Kaydon Finley on a 69-yard touchdown pass. A late field goal extended Aledo’s lead to 24-8 at halftime, firmly putting the Bearcats in control.
Dominance in the Second Half
Aledo’s defense stifled Smithson Valley in the second half, forcing punts and capitalizing on every opportunity. Hejny added another touchdown with a 29-yard pass to Colton McCoy, followed by Patrick-Daniels’ electrifying 51-yard rushing score. By the end of the third quarter, Aledo led 44-8, effectively sealing the game.
Closing Out in Style
The fourth quarter saw Aledo in clock-management mode, but the Bearcats still added a final touchdown from RJ Blake to make the score 51-8. Smithson Valley’s offense remained stymied as Aledo’s defense ensured a scoreless second half for their opponent.
A Championship Legacy
The Bearcats’ dominant performance underscored their status as a powerhouse program, earning back-to-back championships. Aledo’s balanced attack and unwavering defense cemented their place as the best in 5A Division I football.
